Yuta - "Worst Picture Ever!"

I was recording super apple problem with Koki. I didn’t know that Mr.Chan was takin’ a picture. In this picture my hair cut is SO BAD! I guess I should be aware of Mr.Chan the photographer. Our video finished today, and my mum said it is GREAT! I hope we can do this kind of activity again. I can say that I like picture that has my beautiful face.

Parents Getting Involved with their Child's Math

Glad to have a parent post on 5DC's blog!  Thank you!

On Friday, 19 April 2013, students were asked to measure an area, using their own measurement. Vitya took on the task by using his hands. The measurement that Vitya took was the length from his elbow to his wrist, and he named this measurement Joey. One Joey equals to the length from Vitya’s elbow to wriest. Subsequently, Vitya cut the A3 paper and made a square which length of each side is one (1) Joey. He named the square : Joey Square.

The next step was to measure his desk, using the Joey square. Vitya started the measurement by putting the Joey Square at the bottom left corner and subsequently moving the square to the right and to the top, while counting how many Joey Square needed to cover the whole desk. One guideline was given: a fraction shall be done should the square are ou-measured the desk.

After 6 full Joey Squares, Vitya had three (3) squares where each is actually just 7/8. Thus, the total area of Vitya’s desk was : 6 + (7/8 + 7/8+7/8) = 6 + 2 5/8 = 8 5/8 Joey Square.

Measuring Area using _____ squared

When someone tells you the area is 500 square feet, what does that actually mean?  What does the actually look like?

Today, in 5DC we didn't look at SQUARE FEET, nor did we look at SQUARE METERS.  We looked at SQUARE CHUPBABS, SQUARE JASONS, SQUARE CHIPS and a variety of units other students created.  After determining the area of our desks using chalk and SQUARE JASONs, etc, students were asked to go home and discuss it with their parents or an adult at home.

Even parents were given something to do this weekend.

Back with Math

Mathematics is not all about numbers.  A diverse mathematical vocabulary allows students to verbally express what is happening in a mathematical expression.  Today, in our second day in the GEOMETRY unit, we used simple figures to challenge students to use words such as line, square, length, tall, right, below, symmetrical, etc.  It was also a challenge to have students admit that maths is FUN!

Alex, Hae Rin and Miya listen to their partners describe the figure on display so that
they can reproduce the figure in their notebooks.

Pattern Block Towers in Data Handling

I chose a pattern block and I need to build a tower. And count how many pattern blocks in there and do it 10 times. and do it with another pattern block. My highest record of square was 28 and hexagon is 37. I think Su young’s highest record is 40 or over 40 because I saw he build a marina bay sands hotel and he also build a tower that I saw in greece rome history book. Su young always said damn it when the tower fall down and it makes me annoy. And I also did a sayma’s experiment and it was the hardest one. I heard teacher or connie did it 40 times and I don’t know how did they did it. I want to do clay boat and I’ll make boat wide and thick. I want this experiment or similar thing again

The hexagon tower used 37 blocks and it’s my highest record. Hexagon was easy to build because it’s big and it’s wide so it doesn’t fall. If the siren didn’t rang we have more time to draw graph and we can clean waters and things more.

If you were to change something about the experiment today, what would it be?
I’ll turn off the aircon because aircon made my tower fall. And I thought clay boat is the funnest one so if I can change it I’ll do clay boat.

Clay Boats Float

In this picture I am holding a boat made out of clay. This picture was taken just before I put it in the water. In this experiment we had to make a boat out of clay and then put in a tub of water and see how many tiles it can hold before it sinks. If I could have done this differently I would have made my boat with a lot less clay because my boat weighed too much to put tiles in.

Math Experiment in Data Handling

The experiment that I did was on speed about how fast a small ball can go down a ramp and then a big ball go down a ramp. The experiment went well except that my prediction was wrong because I said that small balls would go faster down a ramp then a big ball but the big ball went faster than the small ball. If I was going to change something about the experiment I would probably try to use about the same wait type of ball because the heavier the ball the slower it will go so if I had the same weight balls maybe the smaller one would of gone faster or the big one still stayed as the fastest. The small ball was like a ball that you juggle with and the big ball was a smaller version of a rugby ball so the juggling ball is heavier than the small rugby ball so the rugby ball will probably go faster than the juggling ball. The other thing about the experiment was that both of the balls weren’t completely round so they couldn’t go very far because if they were more round I think the balls would go down the ramp quicker.

Reflection on the Math Investigation

Today we did an experiment in math. We had to choose an experiment and do with a partner. My experiment in math was testing my reflex with ruler. My partner was Ami. First time when I tested my reflex I thought it was, who took longer to grab the rular instead of less. I went well on with shorter reflexs when I knew that it was about faster reflex. I got better and better when I focused more and more.I could have been better at focusing. I couldn’t focus very well because there was a lot of noise when we were reflexing with a ruler. If I were change something about the experiment today It would be having each room to experience because you can focus more. I think also we can find a longer ruler so we can get a lesser score. I think is positive because you can reflex on main concept of this experiment is to focus well.

Recent Activity in Math

In math, the class has been looking at the process of data collection.  It includes stating a purpose and a question, making a prediction, listing materials, writing a procedure, collecting, representing and analyzing data and drawing conclusions from the data.

Last Friday, student completed their own experiments in which they collected data for to help them answer their questions.  They have been given the task in presenting the ENTIRE through a medium of their choice.  For examples, some may choose to write it up on a googledoc, others may also choose to present their process through a Glogster, a movie, or a poster.  The choice is theirs.

There is a task sheet that they have been giving along with a checklist with the parts of the process that they need to include.  They have been given the choice in working with a partner or completing the task independently.

The deadline for submission was set at upcoming Tuesday.  Time will be given in class to organize and work on the task, but there is also things that can be done at home as well, particularly those who have access to a computer (many student have chosen to use a computer to help them with their presentation).  Please check in with your children to see how they are coming with their work.

What we have been eating for breakfast

This is what 5DC breakfast chart looks like after three days.

What can you say about 5DC?

Data Handling

Over the last couple days, we have been talking about DATA.  Some of the vocabulary that has been circulating around the classroom with regards to DATA are "collect", "represent", and "analyze".  Each day, we have collected data on the foods we consume for breakfast.

Check out the graph below.  What can you learn about 5DC?

On Thursday

Today we got our jobs. I was so worried that I would not be the Police Officer but then a spark of joy came and I found out that I was a Police Officer. The whole classroom was noisy in excitement and sadness. I felt unhappy for the people who did not get there 1st choice.

MATH PUZZLE

We did Math Puzzle last week. Also we did in pairs and my partner was Lucas. When i was solving the problem it was hard so I read the clues one by one and I solved the problem one by one so i got the answer. It was excited because i was going well. Also it was interesting when there were impossible answers. I liked Puzzle seven because i solved by myself with no help.

IT WAS SO FUN!!!!!

Super Math Puzzle

Last week, we did a math activity called the math puzzle. We had 4 clues to get a certain number, and the clues were like this:

1st clue-This number is a odd number.
2nd clue-This number is greater than 50.
3rd clue-This number is less than 100.
4th clue-This number is a multiple of 15.
Then, we will get 75.

I enjoyed this, because I like figuring out numbers with a certain clue, like Su Doku. I think that this is a very good exercise to learn math vocabulary, because there are a lot of them written in the clues.
