Min Seo, Koki and Reiji on selling sticks

 
This is me selling some sticks in the classroom. It was very fun because I got to sell a lot of the green coloured sticks, sadly we couldn’t sell a lot of the other colored sticks. :( This is me selling some sticks to Kei, I was explaining why green colours are good so that we can sell all the green coloured sticks same as the other ones. Kei liked to buy a lot of green coloured sticks. Then at the end we had no greens and we still had a lot of blues and reds. If I knew what our customers liked, we would have used more of those colours. In the end, we got 25 Chan dollars.

This week at 5DC, we had a little business by selling colored popsicle sticks. Mr.Chan, gave us 20 Chan dollar to buy four colored popsicle sticks. Each of those popsicle sticks cost 5 Chan dollar. We had pieces of paper for each pair telling what to but Our group were the first to sell the sticks. The Instruction was to chose 10 sticks with three different color(you actually can get all same colors) and lay them on a sheet. Min Seo and I had 3 yellow and purple sticks and we had 4 green sticks. As soon as the customer came to our shops, they mostly bought green sticks. What surprised me was that most of the people that I saw bought only green sticks. Our mission was to buy any color except for yellow. When we were buying the sticks, strangely everybody was buying green sticks. I enjoyed this activity where i sold the sticks since we earned a lot of money by selling. I would like to change the color of sticks to green since everyone likes green. As a seller I learned that I need to know peoples favorite sticks.

This week, we did something fun called ‘Popsicle Sale’. We had two lines of stores and one group had to sell their popsicles and the other group had to buy them, and for few minutes we did that and switched. Mr.Chan gave us each 20 Chan Dollars to buy popsicles. Each popsicle costed 5 Chan Dollars. My line got to sell first, and my partner Reiji and I sold 6 popsicles and earned 30 Chan Dollars. When my line was buying popsicles from the other line of stores, my line’s partners were all given a mission. My mission was ‘The color yellow is disgusting to you. You would buy any color popsicles but yellow.’ ... :( My favorite color is yellow… Anyways, it was easy for me because there were no yellow popsicles in the selling line! Absolutely none. And I bought 4 purple popsicles. In the picture above, I am asking Travis and Jasmine if I could buy 2 purple popsicles.

The Unfortunate Situation

You have suddenly run out of money.
Since you live in an apartment, you still need to pay rent which is $20 per month or you will be homeless.
To live, you will need to eat. Eating cheaply, one person needs only to spend $2 dollars per day.
Additionally, you have to take care of another sibling.
All you have are the few objects that you have managed to save.
You don’t know how long this situation will last, but you should plan that the situation will not change for 4 months.

How do you plan to use these objects to help you survive?

Business Field Trip

Here are some photos from the "Business Trip" that 5SB and 5DC went on, on Wednesday. From a teacher's perspective, the students have been making great progress in their learning of the way people trade goods and services. Students went out to the Holland Village wet market, the Holland Village independent shops above Cold Storage and experienced a Q&A session with Suriya, a very patient store manager at Jelita Cold Storgage.

On Thursday

Today we got our jobs. I was so worried that I would not be the Police Officer but then a spark of joy came and I found out that I was a Police Officer.The whole classroom was noisy in excitement and sadness. I felt unhappy for the people who did not get there 1st choice.

ISS Economy time

In this unit we are doing something called ISS economy where Mr Chan is the mayor of the class room and we all have jobs my job is homework monitor! In this we all get paid different amounts of money. I get $800 chan per week. Some good aspects about this are we get to learn about what it is like in real life, we get to receive LOTS of money and it's fun! Some bad aspects are that we have to pay $500 each week for our desks  which is a lot and we have to pay tax!

Class jobs

Today, we got our class jobs, that we will earn a class salary.

When I opened the envelope, at first, I was sad that I couldn’t get the job I wanted to be. But on second thought, I thought that I was lucky, because my job was one of the top 3 jobs I wanted to be. Then, I heard that we will change our jobs in a few weeks, so I was very happy.

Also, Mr.Chan said that we can earn a bonus, so that means, that I can earn more money than a banker, that earns the most salary in all jobs, if I work extra hard.

What I learned through this activity, is that it is very hard to be employed by a company, because people have to do interviews, and express why they want to be in the company. Even after employed, an employer must write a paragraph, expressing their enthusiasm for doing the project, and why they are good for doing the job.

It was a pity, that I couldn’t get the job I wanted to be, but I’ll do my best.

How We Organize Ourselves

The amazing students in 5DC dove into a new unit this week.  In IB language, it's study of the trans disciplinary theme, How We Organize Ourselves.

Our Central Idea: 

Marketplaces depend on the ability to produce goods and supply services.

Accompanying lines of inquiry: 

1. Ethics of trade

2. Ways in which we depend upon people in other places

3. Global movement and communication affects the availability of goods and services

Students in 5DC put together their heads to come up with business plans to sell one of the items that I had assigned (video games, soda, bag of onions, tshirts, and old books).  They started off simply with asking questions, then they had to focus on asking questions that would help them with the business plans.  

5DC students are great with asking questions. They turned their focus from asking questions such as, "What's the best video game ever?" to "Where will we get the video games?"

 

Then students had the chance to read other groups' questions, and add questions that they thought would help the original group with their ideas.  Finally, students were asked to draw up some rough plans for their business ideas and create a 3 minutie
