Over the last couple days, we have been talking about DATA. Some of the vocabulary that has been circulating around the classroom with regards to DATA are "collect", "represent", and "analyze". Each day, we have collected data on the foods we consume for breakfast.
Check out the graph below. What can you learn about 5DC?

5DC Students present their work with KIVA
Entirely written, revised and produced by students of 5DC is a short skit about KIVA. Students studied marketplaces in their previous unit of inquiry which led them to create their own mini-businesses. After costs were returned, over $600 in profit was collected.
The money raised during the market day was placed into our KIVA account. Students then selected small businesses across the world to fund.
Visit www.kiva.org for more information.
Great work 5DC!!

Connie and Ami blog about ISS
In the future, we think we should have the lockers that American Schools has which are ones that are bigger and longer because they have shelves and more room. We also should have clean toilets that do not have some rust on them. Right now the toilets have rust and it doesn’t smell very nice they also have paint that is all picked off. In our opinion we should have uniform for the cleaners because we don’t know if they want to mop in front of us because we will not realise they are ISS cleaners. For money we could have more free dress days so everyone could bring in $1 each time we have free dress and the money goes to ISS.

Writing in 5DC
Students in 5DC have been hard at work writing their persuasive essays. The writing focus in this piece of work is on organization. There was a strong need in the class to use paragraphs and to logically structure paragraphs in a way that would allow the reader to understand the writer's ideas with greater ease.
Research skills and applying what was discovered in their research is also being taught explicitly. Students now have an understanding of how statistics, facts, quotes and examples can be woven into their writing pieces to give their persuasive arguments some added weight instead of relying solely on reasoning. Students have been very successful in incorporating their newly discovered information along with adding references within the body of their text to their sources.
Logistically, in addition to adding to their persuasive essays by writing the next paragraph on their google docs, students were expected to read the comments and make the appropriate revisions. They would receive feedback through individualized comments directly on their google docs along with a short evaluation (checklist) for that day's work.
I am extremely proud of the work the the students have been doing over the course of this writing unit. Not only have they have shown themselves to be savvy researchers, 5DC students have proved to themselves that they are capable of writing with strong organization.

Alex M on Market Day
In school everybody has been working with their group and preparing for market place. In my group are Suyong and Lucas. Over the weekend they both came over to my house to make the items we needed to make it happen. My group is doing a service where people throw wet sponges at my face and teacher’s faces. Some of the teachers that will be there are Ms.Nisa, Mr. Myers, Mr. Nathan and maybe even Ms. Alden! A throw at me is 20 cents, a throw at a teacher is 40 cents, and a throw at Ms. Alden is $1. All the money we raise will go to a microfinance organisation called KIVA. I think that we will raise a lot of money because it will be very popular!

Video - Bridge over Troubled Waters
On the behalf of fifth grade, I would just like to thank Alex M for his hard work and contribution to UN night. Alex voluntarily took time out of his lunch breaks to complete this video. For all those who have done some video editing before, you can appreciate the time and focus needed for a task like this.
Thanks Alex!
Thanks Alex!

Business Field Trip
Here are some photos from the "Business Trip" that 5SB and 5DC went on, on Wednesday. From a teacher's perspective, the students have been making great progress in their learning of the way people trade goods and services. Students went out to the Holland Village wet market, the Holland Village independent shops above Cold Storage and experienced a Q&A session with Suriya, a very patient store manager at Jelita Cold Storgage.
