Parents Getting Involved with their Child's Math

Glad to have a parent post on 5DC's blog!  Thank you!

On Friday, 19 April 2013, students were asked to measure an area, using their own measurement. Vitya took on the task by using his hands. The measurement that Vitya took was the length from his elbow to his wrist, and he named this measurement Joey. One Joey equals to the length from Vitya’s elbow to wriest. Subsequently, Vitya cut the A3 paper and made a square which length of each side is one (1) Joey. He named the square : Joey Square.

The next step was to measure his desk, using the Joey square. Vitya started the measurement by putting the Joey Square at the bottom left corner and subsequently moving the square to the right and to the top, while counting how many Joey Square needed to cover the whole desk. One guideline was given: a fraction shall be done should the square are ou-measured the desk.

After 6 full Joey Squares, Vitya had three (3) squares where each is actually just 7/8. Thus, the total area of Vitya’s desk was : 6 + (7/8 + 7/8+7/8) = 6 + 2 5/8 = 8 5/8 Joey Square.
