Turning the wheels in week four

Things are finally settling down in week four.  Student have learned the routines of the class, allowing them to focus more of their attentions on learning.

Our first current event presentations took place this week.  Students went through their sources for news and pulled out events that they found interesting.  We had everything from escaping penguins to news from the planet Mars, showing just how diverse the interests range in the classroom.  Way to go class!

On the literacy front, students took time in the computer lab using internet sources to research interesting and juicy facts about people from their own countries.  It is such a pleasure being in an environment where I am able to read biographies about Shakespeare (Britain), Zillur Rahman (Bangladesh), King Se Jeong (Korea), Tony Hawk (USA), Antoni Gaudi (Spain), and Fictor Roring (Indonesia), just to mention a few.  In the PYP, support for the mother tongue is encouraged, so students were encouraged to look up information in their own languages as long as their notes and eventual biographies were written in English.

In Math, students created posters showing their unique strategies in solving multiplication problems.  Here they are, visiting each others work.
Carsen, SuYoung, Miya and Lucas checking out how Emellia, Connie, Chiemi and Ami solve multiplication problems.

We would also like to congratulate Alex, Ami and Emellia for being voted in as house captains for their respective sports day teams.  Look for lots of friendly competition between the four houses!

This week, Amy displayed incredible and sincere appreciation for compliments given to her by classmates following her current events presentation.  If there is ever a model for the word, ENTHUSIASM, take a look at Amy!  We're very thankful we have you in our class.
