Mr. Chan

Hi there!  A big welcome to the 5DC portal.

I'm Derrick Chan and I have been given charge of guiding an enthusiastic group of young individuals through their learning journey for the 2012-2013 school year.  Originally born into the vibrant city of Toronto, I consider myself lucky to have grown up in a multicultural environment.

As I studied to attain my degrees, I found myself looking further and further out into the world, attempting to identify and understand the commonalities we share as well as the differences that enrich us as inhabitants of the world.  Although I didn't quite understand my actions at the time, today, with all the travel experience and growth I have experienced, leaving my homeland was the best thing to do to fulfill my desire to be more involved in the world.

In the past, I have taught in schools in Canada (Vancouver, Guelph), South Korea (Asan, Suwon), and Britain (Croydon) in both state and private environments.  This experience is something I treasure as it helps me broaden my understanding of philosophies and pedagogies that are used around the world.

  1. Greetings
I am the Grandmother (Granny) to Carsen and Cooper Bailey and I have just watched your December 2012 Concert on the internet here in Gloucester, England. I would like to say that you all did a very good job and I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I really like to see what Carsen and Cooper are doing while they are away from us and it helps me to feel that they are closer to me at this time as they are missed very much. Have a wonderful and peaceful Christmas and I look forward to seeing more of all of your activities in the New Year. Many thanks to all for the hard work that obviously went into organising everything.

    1. Dear Mrs. Turley,
Firstly, I would like to thank you for being so interested in Carsen and Cooper's education that you would visit their class blogs. These blogs are maintained just for this purpose of sharing and communicating what is occurring in the classroom. Secondly, it makes me excited personally that I get to correspond with you personally, as I have read a biography that feature you as its central character. Despite the great physical distance separating you from Carsen, you are loved and missed dearly.

Thank you for your greeting. I hope we can share more of these throughout the last five months of the school year.

      Happy New Year!

  2. Greetings Mr Chan, thank you for the response to my comment, everybody these days appears to be so busy with work and schooling that there does not appear much time for letter writing and with the time difference between our two countries even using internet communications like Skype are not easy so I really appreciate being able to keep up with Carsen and Cooper via these blogs. It makes a great difference when I do manage to talk to the boys via Skype that I know what they have been up to and can converse with them and share in their excitement about it. Keep up the good work.

    Regards

    Sonia Turley

  3. Hello Mr. Chan I am Min Seo.
I think you are the best teacher in 5th Grade!
But you can be a little bit more funnier.^^
I like the Reading Log. I did it in 3rd Grade but in 4th Grade I didn't get to do it so I wasn't able to check and know which books I have read and how many of them I read.

I didn't know that you've taught the students in Korea! And I came from Suwon to Singapore.

  4. Hello Mr. Chan I'm Min Seo.
I think you are the best teacher in ISS!
I like the home works in 5DC and I like 'Reading Log' the most.
Because I did it in 3rd Grade but I didn't do it in 4th grade.
I like it because if I have it, I can check and know which books I read throughout the year and which levels of the book I have read in 5th Grade. I can also see if I have improved in reading English books by typing the book name in the library computer, searching it, finding the book and reading through it to see if it became too easy for you to read.
I am looking forward to going to more field trips and going to CAMP!
