2ND STUDENT COUNCIL MEETing!

Hi, my name is Arifah and I’m from 5DC. So today, we didn’t really talk about any issues. Mr. B was coaching/teaching us how to handle issues on the playground. Like last semester, student council will be on duty during break times. Last semester, each class had to go on duty once a week but now it’s changed. Now each class will have a chance to go on duty for one whole week for the whole entire semester. We’re starting from Grade 3 - Grade 5. The last grade on duty would be 5th grade. Last semester, we had student council wear hats and sashes for the students to notice student council is on duty. Now, we will be wearing the problem solving hexagon “necklace”. The “necklace” is going to be filled with problem solving instructions and some choices the students can make instead of just fighting and arguing.

THANK YOU!

Arifah shares her process in creating the How We Express Ourselves Summative Project

On the 15th of November, our class - 5DC had a Media Gallery and what everyone had to do was set up their presentation or Media summatives and just pin it up on the wall or play it as music, movies, pictures or posters. My summative was played as music. I also had a picture to go with the song.

What I did with my summative was I took another song which was “Coming Home” and changed all the lyrics except for the chorus. After I changed the lyrics, I converted a backing track of Coming Home to garageband and recorded myself singing the song I changed. I thought this was the best summative I created/completed so far. While we were all completing our summatives, I also had to sing Sofie’s song. She wrote a song for her summative and she also did the same thing as me. She changed all the lyrics to the song “we are never getting back together” to her own song and she named her song “Never judge the book by it’s cover” After she change the lyrics, she also converted the backing track of “Never getting back together” to garageband and told me to sing the song.

During the Gallery, I heard and saw wonderful, AMAZING work. There were songs/music, stories, posters, movies and Images. They all looked FANTASTIC. When I looked at all of them, a lot of them actually conveyed a strong message. Some were playful, some were serious and all of them we POWERFUL. So I would say 5DC did an EXCELLENT job in conveying messages. Thank you for reading my post! Oh and if you want to hear my summative, the link is down below (but you might need to download it). - Mr Chan has placed the song on Soundcloud.

Sofie Song - "Never judge a book by its cover"

In a study of Media in our How We Express Ourselves unit. Sofie chose to convey the message, "Don't judge the book by its cover" through a song whose lyrics were written by herself. Arifah, another 5DC student and friend of Sofie, provided the beautiful vocals for the track. 5DC is proud to have you two in our community.

 Check out the track below.

Preparing Portfolios and Reflection

On the 21st of October We - 5DC have been preparing for our portfolios and preparing for the 3 way conference. A lot of our work has been from our reflections on our unit. I have picked my reflections on analyzing media, Dove evolution video reflection and also my first garageband song (but technically not really my first) but even though preparing for those things have been a lot of work, I still thought preparing was actually quite fun because throughout this unit, I’ve been amazed of how communication can be sent away to people and maybe animals on the unit Media. I’d probably have the unit - Media as my favourite unit so far. Anyways about my reflections if you want to look at one reflection that i’ve done, it will be down below. Maybe you can do a reflection of this piece. Can you? Hope you enjoyed reading my post!

REFLECTION

1. What happened in the video?

What happened was that a group of people (editors/photographers/producers/directors/makeup artists) all took just an ordinary girl in their studio and the makeup artists put makeup on the girl and made her look different. They also did different things to the girls hair and took a photo of her in makeup. After that they put a photo of her in photoshop and edited some parts of her face.(which surprised me)

2. What is the message in this video?

I think the message in this video is that don’t believe everything in pictures even though they look real. I think this is the message because what the people did with a normal girl was that the producers/directors/makeup artists put makeup on an ordinary girl and made her look different. They also did different things to the girls hair and took a photo of her in makeup. After that they put a photo of her in photoshop and edited some parts of her face.

3. Did anything surprise you?

Yes actually. A lot of thing surprised me. What surprised me was that the producers/editors/photography people actually photoshopped some parts of her face and I did not expect that because I think the girl actually looked ok the way she already was without the photoshop editing. I’ve never really seen people do this stuff so i’m quite surprised.

4. What does this video tell you about how media is created?

I think what this video told me was that media can’t always be 100% natural. I think that what the video is trying to say is that some photos may not be real by itself. Anything is possible so I think that’s what the video is saying. Also it might be saying don’t believe everything on pictures, drawings or billboards.

Arifah on Sports Day

On September 13th, our school had a sports day. It was great fun. We had to do Javelin, shot put, long jumps and running races. My favourite activity in sports day was competing in races because I love running and I thought it was fun. Even though I didn’t win the races, it was still worth it.. The races that I was in was the 80m race, the 200m race and the relay. I was put in Newton. When I was in Grade 2 and 3 Newton won 1st place all the time but I didn’t really make a big deal about it. In this Sports Day Orchard won 1st place, Somerset won 2nd place, Newton won 3rd place and Raffles won 4th place. . One thing that I liked about sports day was that everyone cheered for their team and also no bullying or no fights were happening between anyone so that was great. Later on, our school will be having a swimming gala. I’m not really good at swimming so i’m really nervous about that.
                   GO NEWTON!!!!

Multiplication Poster

This is a picture of a word problem that I created with my partner(friend) Mads in math. We had to write a word problem and also be creative of our work. Our word problem was about pets. What we did was that we wrote the word problem on a piece of paper and solved it in different methods.
Example: the column method and the array method.

After we were finished writing the word problem. We started to draw pictures and paste it on the paper. I thought it was fun. If you care to solve the problem of what our word problem was. Feel free to solve it.

Word Problem
There were eleven houses. Each house had thirteen pets.
How many pets would there be if you added them all together?
